Train to Pakistan
Train To Pakistan is a historical novel by Khushwant Singh, published in 1956. It recounts the Partition of India in August 1947. The present edition was released on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Book Review Train to Pakistan is not really a review (as it is a SmartBuy classic) but more a summary of the novel.
The story begins with a vivid description of how the village Mano Majra was like. In 1947 partition does not mean much to the Sikhs and Muslims of the village on the border of India and Pakistan ; until the seeds of hatred and suspicion were sown.
The descriptions of various characters in the story are presented in great detail for readers to surmise what would have transpired during the turmoil. Author does not delve into the politics of the Partition. He probably wanted to bring out the human aspect and provide a social context. The story, in spite of being a work of fiction, appears to be very close to reality owing to the detail and the vivid characters it portrays.
In the Partition, the major change was political; India being divided into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. Train To Pakistan is a must read for all those who want to get a glimpse of what had happened as consequence of one of the most saddened episodes of not just of the history of the subcontinent.
